Witchy Lady Macbeth

“Miss Bateman as Lady Macbeth” is the name of this graphic.

As far as I remember Lady Macbeth have not killed anyone yet but she helped Macbeth to kill Duncan. In this graphic blood dripping from her hands. I think the painter of this graphic tried to symbolize her murderous part. In the “unsex me” part, she talks to spirits. After that she might have changed to something else. The thing that I am trying to point out is she looks like a witch. She has grey hair, the same colour with witches although in the cover of the book she has red hair and in the movie she is blonde. Also, she has a medallion what looks like a witchcraft.

To sum up, I think in this graphic the painter/designer tried to symbolize the changes of Lady Macbeth after she speaks to spirits. Bloody hands, medallion and grey hair gives that impression.

  1. Maybe the reason that blood drips from her hands is eventhough she didn't kill Duncan, she was the one who planned to kill him. She highly influenced Macbeth to kill Duncan, that's why there is no blade in her hands, yet there is blood which we don't know where it comes from.

  2. I agree that she is portrayed perfectly in terms of her supernaturally evil sides. She didn't kill anyone in person, only killed Macbeth and the woman and men Macbeth loves in the long term. I also wondered who Miss Bateman was, and did some research. She was actually a victorian celebrity/actress in 1870's. There are magazines featuring her in the cover page.
