Polanski's vs Kurzel's
The banquet scene of Kurzel's Macbeth is less effective than Polanski's Macbeth. Kurzel decided to do the scene without the part where people invite Macbeth to sit and he says the table is full. Polanski's version is more effective because at first table is shown with one empty sit (reality) and then with Banquo sitting (Macbeth's view). Also people replying to Macbeth's "the table is full" with, "here is the empty seat"and pointing to "Banquo's place" is really effective. In Kurzel's version Banquo is just standing among other people. If I haven't read or watched Polanski's version I wouldn't know that is the Banquo's ghost. And how is he even similar to a ghost?! Seemed like a normal person with some dirt on his face. In Polanski's, color is deadly and blood is pouring from his face and neck. Blood is effective for depiction because it tells us that the person/ghost was murdered. He did not die just lying on bed from serious sickness. Also, Macbeth's reaction is way better in Polanski's version. I even can't tell if Macbeth is terrified. It could be just actor's performance but the part with Macbeth's terrified reaction should have been a little longer just like Polanski's. So, decision to cut "sitting ghost", make the ghost look like a normal person and short duration of Macbeth's reaction - are reasons why Kurzel's Macbeth is less effective than Polanski's.
