Environment in Macbeth

Macbeth is a play that heavily focuses on the internalization of the characters. We frequently witness internal conflicts, tough decisions and interesting motives. Every action taken and every word spoken by a major character reflects his inner thoughts that Shakespeare wants the audience to know. Monologues are used to give a more in-depth analysis of the characters. With that much focus on the characters, I believe the play is missing in building an environment. We do not get much surrounding description as the reader. Of course, seeing the play on a stage would not cause these problems, since props can be used to build the environment. However, since we are only reading a text of the play, such a thing is impossible. Therefore, I decided to show you an image that somewhat depicts the environment of Macbeth. It helps me, as a reader, better understand the environment that the play takes place in, how it impacts the story itself or reflects the tone of the story. As you can see, the image depicts a dark and gloomy scene, where no major life form can be found. It a barren land of rocks and wild clouds. I believe this depiction is very accurate with tone Shakespeare creates. In the play, we observe numerous characters lose their compassion and let themselves only driven by their ambitions and become wild, just like the landscape depicted in the picture.

  1. This is a very important point! We talked a little about this atmosphere when we first started reading the play, but we haven't really returned to this question. However, I wonder if you think that the movie does a good job in depicting the environment and its reflection of evil deeds and thoughts.
