Depiction of Macbeth's Character

Edwin Booth as "Macbeth" from life [graphic] / Arthur Jule Goodma…
[1889]
ART Box G653 no.1 (size L)

The above pictures tries to depict Macbeth. I found this picture interesting because I had this impression that Macbeth is a young, ambitious man who dreams about being the king, yet lacks the courage to do necessary evil to achieve it. At the same time, I thought of Macbeth as being someone who has a lot of courage in battle and to do the right thing. However, this picture shows Macbeth as someone who is much older than I expected him to be and further gives the impression as if Macbeth is a coward in all aspects of his life. According to me, this picture fails to depict an important aspect of Macbeth's character, and which is that he is fearless in battle and can easily do something which seems right by him.

  1. I agree with what you said. When I first saw this picture I was surprised, as it goes against all the other depictions of Macbeth we've seen (such as in class, in the film). Macbeth looks much like a tired, old man who is ostensibly incapable of evil.
