Selfish Human Nature

In Wealth of Nation: Chapter II Adam Smith states that human nature is motivated by desire for material possessions. Although people want others to be happy, they don't intend to do so without self-beneficial material consequences. However, in my humble point of view, people also tend to make others happy without any material consequence. We intend to feel them happy because seeing them satisfied gives us pleasure. For example, we are giving gifts not with the idea of reciprocation but making them feel happy gives us pleasure. Therefore, I think we are not only motivated by material consequences but also by emotional consequences. however in both cases humans are selfish and intend to help for their own interests. This argument reminds me an episode about selfish good deeds from Friends. Enjoy!
