Dashing the Brains Out!

In the play Macbeth Act 1 Scene 7 is one of the most surprising scene of the whole play. At the beginning of the scene, Macbeth tries to discourage himself in order not to kill the king Duncan. He afraids about the justice that can find him in this world, the "bloody instructions" that he will teach to others.  He also considers how good the king Duncan is. With all these hesitations, doubts and fear of consequences, he ends up with no further progress in that business. However, Lady Macbeth is very good at sneaking into Macbeth's brain. She insults him with being sick, questions his love and fearlessness. Finally, she occupies his mind by saying that he is not a man.

Until this point the play and the Polanski's interpretation is alligned. Nevertheless, Polanski does not want to interpret one of the most brutal part of the whole scene and the play. The part where Lady Macbeth expresses her thoughts about breaking a promise. According to her she would prefer to dash her baby's brain out while the baby is sucking and smiling in her face rather than breaking a promise that she gives. One can intuitively make a connection between one of the previous scene which is the famous "unsex me" speech (Act 1 Scene 5). In that scene she would like to be unsexed while her blood is thickened. She also wants to witness the fall of dunnest smoke of hell. So, nobody can see what she is doing in the thicker night. She fully awares that she is not capable of planning to kill the king Duncan. However, she desires to kill him, at least make him killed. So, she demands such skills to accomplish her goal in the "unsex me" speech. Nonetheless, we observe that her transformation comes true in a way that there is no human left inside her.

Polanski does not include such a scene in the film. That is mostly beacuse there are so many things that should happen after that and there is no time to remember and make a reference such an emotional and a bizarre scene. However, the importance of Lady Macbeth's idea should be considered. Her ideas indicates that she is capable of doing anything in order to get the kingship. It does not matter whether killing your own baby counts or not.
