Rene Descartes: The Appearance of Modern Philosophy

Descartes can be regarded as a writer, mathematician and philosopher. Although these epithets are both valid, the first connotation is about philosophy when his name is rumored. His contributions to philosophy is the most important factor for this interpretation and his contributions are hailed by many other philosophers. For example Hegel writes, “with Descartes the culture of modern times, the thought of modern philosophy really begins to appear.” in his Lectures on the History of Philosophy. Hegel's perspective is important because before Descartes, the philossphy is not considered by any methodology. The reason which regarding him as a founder of the modern philosophy is because of having a methodology for the process of thinking.
Evaluating Descartes as a founder of modern philosophy is important because he was a key figure in scientific revolution in the Europe. Enlightenment age has given an important value to reasoning and  scientific methodology fairly. Therefore, trying a methodology for philospohy lead to born of modern philosophy and the leadership was done by Descartes. What he says in this quotation refers to the importance of having a methodology for reasoning: "The entire method consists in the order and arrangement of the things to which the mind’s eye must turn so that we can discover some truth."
On the other side, the scepticism should be commented, if Descartes' position for modern philosophy is elaborated. The most famous quotation of hi is "I think, therefore I am." is very significant effect on scepticism. Since there started a methodology, new movements in modern philosophy occurred. That point also made Hegel's interpretation valid.
To conclude, Descartes can be regarded as a founder of modern philosophy as Hegel supported. The main reason is having a methodology for thinking process and initiating the scientific revolution in Europe made his position very important for science and philosophy. There are still many movements of philosophy based on his ideas and contributions to philosophy.
