Another Perspective of Nature and Order

Hello everyone!

We learned how nature can be an influence to different subjects such as art or architecture. That remined me about one of my visit to Barcelona and an amazing church I saw there. Its name is La Sagrada Familia, and I am adding some web pages if you want to look in detail.

In order to connect it with what we have seen in the class, I can explain how it is related with nature. Gaudi, architect of La Sagrada Familia, wanted to build a church that has a specialty compare to other churchs in Europe. Because of the financial difficulties, construction is still going but it is possible to visit as a touristic place.

Gaudi believed that natural beauty is coming from balance and mathemathics. He observed trees, plants, animals and many other parts of the nature. As a result, we imitaded these objects for La Sagrada Familia. At the entrance, we can see some colums that is inspired by tree roots.

Inside of the church is also under impression of nature. Colors and light are considered one of the most important feature. In addition to that, verticality was important to symbolise elevation towards God. For that manner, rising pyramidal design is used. Inside of the church, colums are considered as branches.

There are some parts that look like honey comb on colums inside the church. We can even see actual fruit and plant sculptures. From all of these, we can say that Gaudi was appreciating natural order and studied the beauty beyond this order for constructing a church.

Even though Gaudi's idea is not exactly similar those we saw from Renaissance and Enlightenment, I believe this church is one of the most beautiful examples of how architecture influences from symmetry, calculations, balance and mathemathics that come from Nature.
