When I watched "Virtual Environments" by Peter Gornstein, I was impressed by the similarity between Italian Renaissance Art and today's modern computer games industry. Why there are so many similarities between them? After considering some features of Renaissance Art, I realized that both Italian Renaissance Art and modern computer games industry combine technical information and visual materials. Computer games industry inherited the ability of putting visual arts into technology/mathematical order in order to enhance human appeal.
It is seen that the terms "depth", "space", etc. are used to describe a story and they are depended on measurements, apart from their artistic value. Everything is planned, visuals should be organized. They are not randomly placed into the computer games, because as Renaissance artists did, computer programmers aim to "guide the eye through the space". There should be a visual hierarchy in order to catch the viewers' attention. That's why vertical compositions are created and team of lighters, 3D modellers, compositors and builders work together. By sketching and brainstorming, they try to receive the best product. It's a marketing strategy. Technology itself is not able to satisfy people's needs alone. Humans are not only rational, they are also emotional. People want to own and see the beautiful one, because everyone desires to have aesthetic pleasure.
Consequently, the tradition of Italian Renaissance Art influenced today's computer games industry. Different than the Renaissance period, combining visual arts and technical information/technology is no longer a matter of discovering God's creativity. It's a matter of marketing via visual/aesthetic approach.
