"...rather than give up on our free will altogether, I think it may be true that Fortune governs half of our actions, but that even so she leaves the other half more or less in our power to control."(pg.67). Machiavelli believes that we have our own control and free will on controlling our lives, but half with the effects of the fortune, in other words luck. Fortune will change our lives when she finds a weak point and if you can manage to have the same path with your free will and your luck, I mean if you are prepared for the changes, you will be successful in life.
I believe, as Machiavelli does too, that if you are not prepared for the changes you won't be able to maintain your situation and probably end up with failure. Machiavelli gives Italy as an example in his book, 'The Prince', that they didn't have any strong protection like France or Germany and that's why all the destruction happened with little changes.
As it come to how a prince should manage the effects of the fortune and his own control if his life, Machiavelli believes that he should be both cautious and patient but when the time comes to change, he should be aggressive enough to protect himself from getting hurt.
We can conclude as if a person can suit him/herself for the changing times of the Fortune, s/he will prosper but if not, s/he will fail. And I agree with Machiavelli with this, if you believe that everything's gonna be same for the rest of the time, you will maintain your success and don't have any other alternatives or preparation, you won't be able to protect yourself so you should change your personality and how you behave within the times of change.
