Modernity is one of the main ideas that we explore in this class and with Alberti's book we started to investigate Renaissance art as well.
The discussions that we do in class show that Renaissance art is about painting or sculpting things as realistic as possible. The book On Painting clearly shows this and of course many many websites such as http://www.history.com/topics/renaissance-art and http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/history-of-art/naturalism.htm#history and of course wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_of_Europe solidifies this idea. This was their understanding of modern art.
On the other hand when we think of modern art we think of paintings of completely abstract concepts out of the ordinary shapes and sytles and a general artistic expression which is most of the time anything but realistic.See the art genres on this link to understand it better:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contemporary_art#2000s . This is our understanding of modernity in art
I just want to point out that although both the people in the renaissance era and people of today know what modernity is, these ideas can be completely opposite as it can be seen above. Modernity is something very fluid and vague and it can easily shift from one edge to another. I think we should think about the word modern with this aspect as well. It kind of shows that modernity shouldn't and cannot always be regarded as something positive.
