Music and Math

The other day in class we were discussing the idea of a mathematical base for the things we find aesthetically pleasing. For example: Music. Culturally speaking, it is a universal art form but it often differs by leaps and bounds within this sphere. So, if we are programmed to only find certain mathematical progressions pleasing, why do we have such diversity? I will not attempt to answer this question but rather link you to a video which hopefully illustrates this concept of diversity and aesthetics. And who knows, we may just answer a few other questions for ourselves.

So, question number 1: what is the math in music? Answer: A-rythem-etic.
