Sandro Botticelli

Ever heard of Botticelli? You might not have heard of him, but you must have heard of his work. He was a painter, and to his misfortune, he received posthumous reputation. His most famous paintings are The Birth of Venus and Primavera.

The Birth of Venus

I think that this painting still represents some of the beauty and health standards in today's world.

Primavera

I came across this painting on the crazy murder show Hannibal where no one actually dies. Dr. Lecter recreated a small portion of the painting with two people but I'm not going to provide the picture since some readers might be disturbed.

For me, however, the most interesting work of Botticelli is Mappa dell'Inferno(Map of Hell). Dante Alighieri uses this painting in Divine Comedy while depicting his idea of hell. Here is a link to a website containing some information about Botticelli's life and work, and also the most clear picture of the painting on Internet.

  1. Botticelli is indeed one of the most magnificent painters of the Renaissance, and his celebration of human beauty really exemplifies the humanism of the time period. Naturally, the famous painting of Spring (Primavera) included above suggests the theme of rebirth, as well. But his image of Dante's inferno is also fascinating! Thanks for sharing that...
