Continuity

A line is drawn on a canvas, possibly the simplest component of a composition after a dot.  But why do we need to draw a line? To give the perception of continuity? Are the lines drawn on a canvas really continuous, or do they change form of we observe them correctly?  In other words, how do we prove that a line is a line?  We use maths.
