LEMENTATION-GIOTTO

Giotto's Lementation is a mile stone in painting history with the enhancements that has occured by the Reneissance. This painting is in a way a clue that are about to happen with its' features. Giotto is an important figure with his paintings during Early Reneissance.  As Alberti suggests, this painting posseses, Reneissance painting principles such as art and nature, percepective and historia.(Alberti 48)

Reneissance painters put so much emphasis on the topic of art and nature in their paintings. Nature that they depict in their paintings are sometimes the  'pure' nature that shows beauty of the nature that is observed. However, sometimes painters tend to depict 'human nature' like Gitto performs in his Lementation. Emotions belong to all beings and the easiest way to depict emotion in painting is to study human nature in detail. In Lementation we see emotions such as sadness , despair and love.

It is obvious that percepective is appropriately utilized by Giotto in Lementation. The vanishing point of the percepective points is the deep of the sky where all the beings come from.  When we compare this painting with the ones that are performed before Reneissance we observe huge shift in quality. The characters that are closer to the observers look bigger than the others that are at the back. Furthermore, the body part's ratio is also appropriate. The angles that are in the sky are much more smaller than human beings due to the fact that they are actually millions of kilometers away. The usage of light is also perfect in this painting. There is certain angle of light that makes a certaing area bright and certain area darker. This technics creates a new term that Giotto also utilizes that is called shading.  The places that are between the light and objects are drawn darker as a result of the shading technique. Principles such as percepective, coloring and shading implies the importance of what Alberti always mentions that is the study of apllicable math and optics. Without the knowledge about this subjects, it is impossible to come up with this kind of a successful painting.

Reneissance paintings also contain historia inside. Historia means that most of the reneissance paintings contains a historical story inside them. In this painting we observe a religious historical story.  The historia of this painting is the explanation of the time period when Jesus was taken out the cross and put in grave. Jesus is being hold by 4 woman without touching the ground. People around Jesus, and the angles that are flying in the sky was lementating for the death of Jesus. The woman that holds the head of Jesus is Meryem and she is the saddest figure. Because it must be emotionally devostating to see your son death. The two men that stand a little bit further than the women are the ones that helped Jesus to be taken from cross. Furthermore, behind the relatives of Jesus, there is a crowd that are also sad for the death of him.

When we compare study this painting in detail, with the techniques that is special for Giotto, we observe a successful job. This painting actally shows the observers that a painting does not only consist of brush strokes that are random. A true painting contains studies  inside such as math, physics and nature . Another important feature of this painting is the sign of the start of Reneissance(re-birth). Before studying the Reneissance paintings i did not have respect to painters because i did not know that paintings contain this much effort inside. I believe that people all should study nature and try to understand this piece of art.
