                                             "BEAUTY" IN DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES

The art and philosophy of painting are related to "beauty". What is beauty? Philosophers and painters have different definition of "beauty". When examining Renaissance, Alberti asserts that "Beauty is an order or arrangement such that nothing can be altered except for the worse.". I think Alberti tries to show the scientific reasons for the definition of the beauty. The perspective is associated with the definition of beauty by Alberti. Perspective and eye are obviously related to scientific reasons for the beauty. According to Michael Baxendall, "everyone processes visual information in the brain in a different way, using a combination of innate skills and skills based on experience, which are often culturally determined. " ( Painting and Experience in Fifteenth-Century Italy: A Primer in the Social History of Pictorial Style). He asserts that cultural factors affect the visual characteristics that are attractive at any particular time. Therefore, the beauty of the artist in his/her is reproduced by familiar elements. This definition explains the term "period eye". Baxendall gives the example of:
" Compare the mountainous backgrounds in the works of German artists with the green Tuscan              hills of Raphael and Michelangelo. It is also no coincidence that the art of perspective was                  developed in Florence with its straight streets and angular tall buildings, or that colour was so              important to Venetian artists working within a lagoon of reflected light."

To sum up, the definition of beauty which attracts humanity varies. Alberti illustrates beauty with order. He explains this link with geometry and mathematics. Baxendall associates beauty with memories ad culture. Some philosophers and painters associates beauty with aesthetic elements and feelings. We cannot discover the definition of beauty which will be accepted by everyone. History has shown that it varies... It will continue to vary...
