Pope Leo X

We have seen the name of Pope Leo X while reading Machiavelli's life. The text said that after the exile of Machiavelli Pope Leo X has negotiated with Lorenzo the Magnificent for the release of Machiavelli from dungeons. A very interesting fact that our text did not say is that Pope Leo X's real name before becoming the pope was Giovanni di Lorenzo de'Medici. It seems that he was actually Lorenzo the Magnificent's second son. His life was also important for some other aspects of history. For starters, he was the last pope that wasn't a priest. Moreover, he had a reputation for spending money and supporting art. Most important works being done during his era were reconstructing of St.Peter's Basilica and decoration of Vatikan rooms. He has hired artists to decorate Vatikan rooms and one of them was Raphael. Still his most important impact on history was not one of the above. It seems like he was the Pope that did not care and take into consideration Martin Luther. This contempt of the reform Martin Luther seeks developed into the well known Protestant Reformation.
