Kafka

Such a short story by Kafka could not deliver a stronger message than that: average people who have not cultivated their minds cannot reach the truth. This message is actually conveyed through the fact that the messenger fails to deliver the message to the faithful person lying on the bed in the castle. This might even be interpreted as a religious message as the castle seems to be representing God on the grounds that it is located on the top of a hill. A normal person cannot reach God as long as he remains an ordinary servant. But still in my opinion, this is more than a religious message; a philosophical one that tells the reader that one should put an extra effort into his own self-development, sophistication and cultivation. Only in this way can he reach the truth of life. Senses might provide merely one part of the truth, which requires a deeper understanding of what is beyond the shadows as Plato once uttered in his famous book Republic. Individuals are easily deceived by what they experience through their senses, yet the truth can be reached with spirituality. In this respect, I can claim that the imperial message is the highest message to be delivered to humanity.
